In a bathroom, powder-coated steel wins. Wet air does not swell a coated shelf, and one damp pass clears soap film.
Solid wood with a film finish wins a bedroom, where humidity swings are smaller and repair matters more.
A multi-use room rewards a split build. Steel carries the load in a thin section, and the wood top can be sanded when it gets marked.
Cleaning effort, surface by surface
- Tempered glass and mirrorspray a glass cleaner, wipe with a microfiber cloth, then pull a squeegee top to bottom. Two passes minimum, three around a 25 5/8 inch mirror such as IKEA Nissedal.
- Powder-coated steel, such as Elfa Classic or ClosetMaid ShelfTrack: one damp pass with mild soap, then a dry cloth. Ventilated shelves let dust fall through, so skip the brush.
- Solid wood with a film finish, such as IKEA Hemnesone damp cloth, wrung out, and no standing water at the joints.
- Oil-finished wood, such as Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C or Osmo Polyx-Oil: wipe dry, then spot re-oil the worn patch rather than sanding the top.
Wood movement in humid and heated rooms
Wood takes on and releases moisture until it matches the air around it, so a joint that was tight in July opens in February.
The Code Council's piece on timber frame construction makes the point for framing: timber is used dry because wet wood warps as it dries. The same physics governs a bookcase standing against a cold exterior wall.

The finish matters more than the species for cleaning. IKEA Hemnes, a solid pine bookcase, typically sells for about $150 to $250 with a painted acrylic finish. Wipe it damp and keep the joints dry.
IKEA Billy, a particleboard bookcase with paper foil, typically costs $50 to $100. The foil wipes clean, but standing water can lift an edge and swell the core. A water-based clear coat such as Minwax Polycrylic adds a wipeable film.
Powder-coated steel and tempered glass
Thin steel and aluminum carry a load in the smallest section, which is why compact shelving and folding frames use them. Powder coat holds up, but a chip in a damp bathroom rusts.
Elfa Classic shelving uses powder-coated steel on a top track. ClosetMaid ShelfTrack uses the same idea with ventilated shelves that let dust fall through. Both wipe with mild soap, and a chip exposes steel.
Stainless steel costs more and shows fingerprints. Bare aluminum can pit in a humid bathroom, so specify a coated finish.
A mirror across from a window doubles the sightline and the daylight with it. It doubles the clutter too, so aim it at the view, never at a shelf.

Example: a 60 square foot bedroom that doubles as an office

The first month of new finishes
New paint, adhesives, foam and finishes release odors into a room with very little air to dilute them. Ventilate hard during installation and for days after.
The Access Board's indoor environmental quality general recommendations put the rule plainly: tell people before work that produces fumes or dust, and treat fragranced products as a source rather than a fix.
