What to ask before hiring help with small space living
Questions for evaluating designers, organizers, installers, and contractors working on compact rooms.
The right small space living contractor depends on scope. An organizer, interior designer, architect, cabinet installer, electrician, and general contractor have different roles and credentials.
Ask each candidate:
- Which parts of the room and household routine will you measure?
- How do you test circulation and furniture in every use position?
- Who verifies structure, electrical, ventilation, fire safety, accessibility, and code?
- Which drawings, product schedules, and decisions will I receive?
- How are delivery access, assembly, anchoring, protection, and cleanup handled?
- Can you show recent compact-room work with comparable scope?
- What is excluded, and when would you refer to another professional?
- How are allowances, substitutions, change orders, delays, and warranties managed?
Verify licenses and registrations with the issuing authority where required. Confirm insurance and contact references. A design credential or brand certification does not automatically authorize regulated construction.
The agreement should identify scope, deliverables, dimensions, products or approval standards, fees, payment milestones, schedule assumptions, site protection, permit roles, ownership of drawings, photography permission, and dispute terms.
Be cautious when a proposal maximizes cabinetry before inventorying belongings or recommends structural work without investigation. The professional should be able to explain how the plan serves daily actions and preserves required systems.
